MONDAY- March 29

AGENDA FOR TODAY'S CLASS

Please see me (Miss Sciortino) if you were not here on Friday...you will need to check out the book from the library and complete the missed assignment.

HOMEWORK: DUE THURSDAY Apr. 1st
--Finish reading chapters 4 & 5
--Worksheet -- Answer the following questions (use the Internet or other source for questions 1 & 2):
(1) In literature, what is a "red-herring?"
(2) What is an alibi?
(3) Who do you think committed the crime? WHY?? **Name the clues that support your theory!!

MATERIALS you will need for today's class:
Your copy of Murder on the Orient Express
Your manila folders
Your homework assignment...EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED IT!

PROCEDURE

1) Discussion groups will be assigned

2) Small group discussion (while I come around to check your assignments)

-Discuss Ques. #3 from your homework (which character seems the most suspicious and why?)

-Does the author introduce the characters in such a way that makes you curious about them and/or want to know more? Explain.

3) QUESTION FOR THE CLASS: How does a reader keep track of the characters in a story?

4) Group activity: Getting to know the characters.

Part I -- Work together in your groups to describe each of the characters listed below using the following guidelines:

Give at least THREE different descriptive details for each character using details from the text as given by the narrator and ADD to the textual details by giving your OWN impressions (What is their nationality? What is their occupation? What do they look like? How do they behave, talk, walk, smell, etc.) Hercule Poirot, Mary Debenham, Colonel Arbuthnot, M. Bouc, Mr. Ratchett, MacQueen, Princess Dragomiroff

Part II -- Each individual group member will choose one character that was most vivid to them and each will draw their own representation of that character.

*This can be a portrait or any other creative image that represents the character.

5) Quick summary before reading: Opportunity for extra homework points for ONE group!!

What has happened so far in the story?

Where did the story leave off at the end of Chapter 3?

6) Begin reading Chapter 4 together as a class.

7) Hand in your class work and pick up homework sheet.
